The Queensland Spectacle Supply Scheme (QSSS) is a Queensland Government initiative that provides eligible residents with access to basic prescription spectacles. The scheme is administered through the Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme (MASS) and is designed to assist people who may otherwise struggle to afford essential eyewear.
The scheme helps eligible Queenslanders access essential vision correction by providing basic prescription spectacles at a low out-of-pocket cost. Good vision is important for maintaining independence, safety, learning, employment, and overall quality of life, and the QSSS helps make eye care more accessible for those who need it most.
The program covers a range of prescription glasses designed to meet everyday vision needs, helping Queenslanders maintain clear vision for work, study, driving, reading, and daily activities.
Who is Eligible?
To be eligible for the QSSS, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
- Be a permanent resident of Queensland.
- Hold one of the following concession cards in their own name:
- Pensioner Concession Card
- Health Care Card
- Queensland Seniors Card
- Have held the eligible concession card continuously for at least six months before applying.
- Have a clinical need for prescription spectacles as determined by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
Eligibility is verified through the Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme as part of the application process.
How Do You Apply?
Step 1: Book an Eye Examination or Bring a Valid Prescription
You can visit an optometrist who participates in the Queensland Spectacle Supply Scheme for a comprehensive eye examination to determine your prescription and eye health needs. Alternatively, if you already have a current and valid prescription from another optometrist, you may be able to bring this prescription when applying through a participating provider.
Step 2: Confirm Eligibility
Your concession card and eligibility details will be checked as part of the application process.
Step 3: Select Your Spectacles
If approved, you can choose from the range of frames and lenses available under the scheme.
Step 4: Application Submission
Your optometrist or dispensing practice will submit the required paperwork to the Queensland Spectacle Supply Scheme on your behalf. Once approved, your glasses will be manufactured and supplied through the program.
How Often Can You Receive New Glasses?
One of the most common questions patients ask is how frequently they can access glasses through the scheme.
In most cases, eligible patients can apply for replacement spectacles every two years from the date of their last approved prescription.
Earlier replacement may be considered in certain circumstances, such as:
Significant prescription changes resulting in a clinical need for new spectacles.
Loss or accidental breakage of spectacles.
Other circumstances assessed under the scheme’s guidelines.
If spectacles are lost or damaged within the normal replacement period, additional documentation may be required, and approval is not automatic.
How Often Can DVA Glasses Be Replaced?
In most circumstances, eligible patients can receive replacement spectacles every two years. Approval for replacement outside the standard period is assessed on an individual basis. Earlier replacement may be approved when there is:
A significant change in prescription
Loss or irreparable damage to spectacles
Clinical necessity determined by an eye care professional
Other exceptional circumstances approved under DVA guidelines
Optical Products Available Through the Scheme
The Queensland Spectacle Supply Scheme provides a range of basic prescription spectacle options to assist with everyday vision correction.
Depending on your prescription and visual requirements, eligible patients may receive:
Single Vision Distance Glasses
Designed to provide clear vision for driving, watching television, and distance viewing.
Single Vision Reading Glasses
Suitable for reading, computer work, hobbies, and other close-up tasks.
Bifocal Spectacles
Bifocal lenses combine distance and reading prescriptions in the same lens, allowing patients to see clearly at both distances without changing glasses.
Basic Approved Frames
Patients can choose from a range of frames approved under the scheme. Frame styles vary and are designed to provide practical, functional eyewear for everyday use.
Optional Extras
The scheme covers basic prescription spectacles only. Optional lens enhancements such as anti-reflective coatings, photochromic (transition) lenses, tinting, UV coatings, premium lens materials, and designer frames are generally not covered under the scheme and may incur additional costs if selected.
