Good vision is essential for maintaining independence, safety, and quality of life. To support the eye health of veterans and eligible dependants, the DVA Optical Appliances Program funds clinically necessary optical appliances and eye care services, helping ensure access to appropriate vision correction and daily functioning.
Optometry Outlet is an authorised provider under the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Optical Appliances Program, working directly with DVA to supply approved optical products and services to eligible patients.
If you hold a DVA Gold Card or are eligible under certain DVA arrangements, you may be entitled to comprehensive eye examinations, prescription glasses, and other optical aids at little or no cost.

Who is Eligible?
- DVA Gold Card Holders Most Gold Card holders are eligible for clinically necessary optical appliances and eye care services under the DVA Optical Appliances Program.
- Eligible DVA White Card Holders Some White Card holders may also be eligible for optical services where their accepted condition relates to their vision or eye health.

How to Access Your DVA Optical Benefits
Step 1: Book an Eye Examination
Schedule an appointment with our team for a comprehensive eye examination.
Step 2: Bring Your DVA Card
Bring your DVA Gold Card or White Card so we can confirm your eligibility.
Step 3: Select Your Spectacles
If glasses are required, our team will help you choose from the range of approved frames and lens options.
Step 4: Order Your Glasses
Your optical appliance will be ordered and processed through DVA according to the program guidelines.
Can I Have an Eye Test Through DVA?
Yes. Eligible DVA beneficiaries can access comprehensive eye examinations through participating optometrists.
Regular eye examinations are important for:
Monitoring vision changes.
Updating spectacle prescriptions.
Detecting glaucoma.
Screening for cataracts.
Monitoring macular degeneration.
Assessing diabetic eye disease.
Maintaining overall eye health.
Many eye conditions develop gradually and may not cause symptoms until vision has already been affected. Regular eye examinations can help detect problems early and improve treatment outcomes.
How Often Can DVA Glasses Be Replaced?
In most circumstances, eligible patients can receive replacement spectacles every two years. Approval for replacement outside the standard period is assessed on an individual basis. Earlier replacement may be approved when there is:
A significant change in prescription
Loss or irreparable damage to spectacles
Clinical necessity determined by an eye care professional
Other exceptional circumstances approved under DVA guidelines
Optical Products Available Through DVA
DVA provides funding for a range of optical appliances when they are clinically required and prescribed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
Single Vision Glasses
Single vision spectacles can be supplied for either distance or near vision correction.
Bifocal Glasses
Bifocal lenses provide correction for both distance and reading vision within the same pair of glasses.
Multifocal Glasses
Multifocal lenses allow clear vision at multiple distances without the visible line found in traditional bifocal lenses.
Occupational and Special Purpose Lenses
In certain circumstances, DVA may approve occupational lenses or specialised lens designs where clinically justified.
Approved Frames
Eligible patients can choose from a range of DVA-approved frames available through participating providers.
Lens Treatments and Options
Certain lens materials, coatings, and treatments may be approved when considered clinically necessary. Additional upgrades or premium options outside DVA guidelines may attract an out-of-pocket cost.
Low Vision Aids
For eligible patients with significant vision impairment, DVA may provide access to approved low vision aids and devices where appropriate.
